Cover design and social media backgrounds for the award-winning play 'The Other End of the Afternoon' performed at Sydney Fringe Festival 2022.
'The Other End of the Afternoon' won the Silver Gull Award in 2021. It follows a young adult dramedy about Clive, a boy who wears a top hat to school (in case he goes back in time), Bianca, the cool girl who bullies him (and might have a crush on him), Xavier, the world’s worst stepbrother (who wants to be a crime lord), Dylan, the school dropkick (who’s about to snap), and (perhaps) time travel. It’s a humorous, whimsical, quirky and surprisingly moving exploration of loneliness, connection, classism, family, and relationships. The play written and directed by Bokkie Robertson, and performed as part of Sydney Fringe festival at New Theatre in 2022.
I read the play to get a clear sense of the story before discussing possible cover designs with playwright and director Bokkie Robertson. Together we decided upon a warm colour palette that evoked faraway afternoons, and I sketched architectural designs taking inspiration from Dylan's house plans and the Italian buildings the characters would have seen on the Italy trip discussed in the play.
"The social media backgrounds combine modern and aged wall textures with faraway afternoon light to spark potential audiences' imaginations."
